Axles of Evil has been created to help debunk the myths surrounding 4WD or SUV vehicles. Despite the advertising hype, 4WDs are not only a bad choice for the environment, they pose significant risks to both their occupants and other road users. Axles of Evil is a community forum to discuss the growing concerns about the appropriateness of urban 4WDs and to highlight the impact they have on society.

On this site:

  • Recent headlines from around the globe to do with 4WDs
  • Statistics about the use and impact of 4WDs on road users
  • Marketing myths
  • User feedback forums (registration required)

Not Alone

ImageSeems Axles of Evil is not alone in voicing their disgust at the increasing number of 4WDs on our streets. A new site has popped up called Stop Hummers and they are actively protesting the introduction of the Hummer to Australia. When will people stop and think beyond their own self impotence (pun intended) and ditch the truck in favour of smaller safer transport. Or better still, take public transport.

Drive a sedan, hire a 4WD

Image4WD vehicles do not belong in our suburban streets - they cause safety, traffic and pollution problems.

If you REALLY think you NEED a 4WD, consider driving a sedan as your main transit vehicle, and hire a 4WD when you head into the wild. Packages can be very affordable – from as little as $110 per day.

Here are just some of the benefits of driving a day-to-day sedan and hiring a 4WD just for holidays:
  1. You can 4WD in any location in the world. (Can you take your 4WD vehicle as carry-on cabin luggage?)
  2. You can also drive to the national park of your choice and then switch to 4WD at a hire location close to your camping destination.
  3. You can gain valuable advice from local hire operators. (Do YOU know what class of vehicle is required to attempt a Gibb River Road journey? The hire companies do!)
  4. Your 4WD hire will be partially funded by savings in fuel costs, tyre costs and those ever-costly trips to child trauma units.
  5. You will not frustrate sedan drivers by bringing your obtrusive off-road vehicle onto suburban streets.
  6. You can add specialist equipment like CB-radios, snorkels, winches, water and safety gear without cramming your day-to-day transit vehicle with rarely-used features.
  7. You can match the features of your vehicle hire package to the terrain you will attempt to encounter – snorkels for water crossings, long-range fuel tanks for desert crossings.
  8. You can have fabric and luxury interiors in your day-to-day sedan, then HOSE OUT the mud from specialty 4WD interiors (check with your hire contract first!)
  9. Your children will be safer around your day-to-day sedan
  10. Your children will learn valuable lessons about being cautious around special-purpose vehicles and also learn about caring for the environment.
  11. You will find it much easier to park your day-to-day sedan in a tight city lane.
Do not be fooled by advertisements that promise ‘car-like’ safety, ‘car-like’ economy or ‘car-like’ comfort. These types of vehicles are specialist machines designed for off-road use, or worse, compromised in safety and economy without true off-road credentials.

Check with your local travel agent for 4WD hire packages.
